Wait, how do you activate your spy in an enemy stack? I've had to kill my spies twice because I ended up fighting the faction they were in, and they get promoted to general guarding a faction I wanted. It's fun when it works and I am sure there are things within the system I am not aware of to make it more sucessful. Originally posted by Failbot v2.018:Other than that I have incited a small civil war, activated my spy while he was in an enemy stack, caused enemy generals to leave a factions service and captured a whole commandry without a fight. I just feel like the spy system is something that most players will ignore because it feels ineffective and overly complicated. I get that they're getting away from agents and trying something new, but at least agents worked and were simple. Oh and spies either defect or get sent back most of the time. Empowering trade never seems to affect my trade income no matter how many times I use it. The only reliably useful thing it does is reveal another faction's territory, but it still stays in the dark so you can't usually see their armies running around. It feels totally random and makes it hard to come up with a sabotage strategy. I'd really like to be able to cause damage to another faction's armies or cause rebellions, but it always seems like it only lets me do these things in certain commanderies, maybe because that is where the spy is located. Yes you have a lot of options but a lot of them take forever to become available or don't affect much.

I'll admit I don't understand all the options or how to use them most effectively, so I just ignore it and use my armies and diplomacy to accomplish what I want to do. I usually ignore it because it never seems worth putting in the effort to make anything happen. I once took 2 commadaries from Sun Ce doing this, after I had defeated Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan, and my Cao Cay my Vassel as Liu Bei.Īnd when I took the commanderies I took it all, the city, and the resources. After i do my first conquest I'll turn my attention back to them but only this time my conquest will be much easier due to my spies being in high positions. Often times I am not looking to expand where my enemies are only to plunder and weaken them. Usually what I do is have fights with the faction army and defeat a few of their generals and my spies all take up high positions.

Second way is mostly done during mid-late game or even factions with high level generals, as it gets hard for your spy to inflitrate the faction. Usually by the time you face your threat your spy is probably a general or some sort, especially if you been slowly working down the loyalty of the other generals. First way is to start early, make sure your spy is very loyal to you then send him off to a potential threat that you'll face down the line.
